Wairere Boulders

Wairere Boulders is a privately owned nature reserve in New Zealand’s Northland.

Bouldering is NOT permitted in the nature reserve, only in the farm paddocks. Contact with the owners prior to arrival is essential as bouldering is not permitted at certain times of year eg during lambing and calving.

Highland cows can be aggressive towards people they do not know, so you must contact the owners to ensure you are bouldering in a safe location.

A few hours north of Auckland, the area includes a campsite - stay for a weekend or a week to properly explore the hundreds of rocks.

There is no climbing equipment available at the site, so climbers will have to bring their own mats, chalk, shoes, and brushes. Because climbing is relatively infrequent at the site most of the rocks remain covered in moss and lichen, so a few good brushes will be a necessity for bouldering here. There are rare lichens on this property so please do not remove or brush off these endangered species.

The boulders are open everyday and the friendly Scottish owners can provide advice as well as let you know where it might be best not to venture. This is a working farm so please leave all gates as you find them. Make sure to check in with them before straying too far. This is a working farm so please leave all gates as you find them.
